IT'S A GIRL!!

Remember Oakie?  When her sister Tia came home to the Little Valley from the Homestead Up North, Oakie took up residence at the Homestead.  Susan's parents have foaled out a few mares there.  Did you know I've never seen a foal being born?  None of our mares have ever been pregnant.

At 7 am this morning, Pa went outside and what did he see in the corral, against the backdrop of misty Bruce County scenery?

Oakie and her brand new baby.  He figures she was less than an hour old by the time he found them.  I'll always be amazed at how these little guys get moving.  They're born to run.  They really are.  Look at those legs!

Everybody say it with me now, cuz I know you're just dying to:   AWWWWWWW!

Look at those floppy little ears!  Look at that gorgeous white blaze!  Those long legs of hers are almost crossing each other, but they don't!  She's so cute!

And Oakie's a good mother.  This is either her second or third foal.

Just in time for Mother's Day.  Warms your heart, doesn't it?  You know it does.

She's beautiful. Does she have a name? Forgive my lack of knowledge, but can horses give birth w/o help?

Couldn't you just die of cuteness???

For now they are calling her "May" but it's hard to say what her registered name will be.

Horses can give birth without help, as long as there are no complications. They babies have to come out with the front hooves first, one slightly in front of the other so that the shoulders aren't too wide to fit, and the nose resting on the knees.

Now think of everything that *could* go wrong and you'll know why my mom doesn't want anything to do with pregnant mares. Those sows hardly ever had problems. They didn't even bother lying down first half the time.

Animals are amazing. I sure as heck wasn't ready to get up and walk around less than an hour after I birthed my babies. And my babies were tiny compared to Oakie's baby!

When I was younger and working out in the 'industry', spring always meant little baby foals. I miss them soooo much. She's beautiful, and I just have to say it... Awwwwwwwww!

Adorable! I'm looking forward to lots more pix of her!

May I suggest that the mare's halter be removed during turnout so that the foals hoof doesn't get caught in it while her head is down and grazing.
