Here is the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT I've been waiting SIX YEARS to make!!!

I've been mentally composing this post for weeks, no, years, and I'm just gonna go for it okay?

WE SOLD OUR RECORDING STUDIO.  WE HAVE BOUGHT A NEW PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK!!!!

That's right -- we'll be in our own home again!!  I can finally stop having dreams and nightmares about the cute bungalow we sold.  I can stop dreaming and obsessing, both waking and sleeping, about whatever home would be ours in the future.  It's really happening.  It's for real.  The deal is firm.  The sorting and purging and packing up of our belongings has been started, and about a month from now, we'll be moving into OUR NEW HOME!  And Jethro will drastically cut his commuting time!

I can say, for real, that this house, our new house, our home, is gorgeous and perfect and wonderful… the kind of house I'd ooh and ahh over and wish, faintly, that someday I could live in a house that pretty.  Dream come true?  Pretty much, yeah!

I AM NOT KIDDING, THIS IS OUR FRONT PORCH!!!

There is only one flaw with this place.  One problem, one serious flaw.

It does not have a barn and pasture.

Yep… we're moving… are you ready for this?  Deep breath… to town.

AAAAAAAUUUUGGGGHHHHHH!

BUT WAIT!

It's okay!

Whaaaaat?  Heidi the Hick is moving to town and it's okay?  Yes it's okay.  But what about my need for wide open spaces and surrounded by fields and horses in sight and a clear view of the horizon?

We found the perfect town lot.  I mean, if you have to live in town, this is the place.   It's on a side street that gets very little traffic, because the road heads out of town to a dirt road, and there's a nasty old wooden plank single lane train bridge that has to be crossed before you reach the side road, so most people just avoid taking that road into town unless they have to.

Our house is between bridges; the "Thunder Bridge" on the way out of town, and a bigger bridge over the river on the town side.  There's one house between us and the river.  Then the river curves around so that across the road, we've got two small houses and then acres of flood plain before a lovely view of the riverbank.  This means that even though I'll be technically living in town… I'm still looking out my window at a hay field!!

That flood plain means there won't be any construction across from us.  And there won't be anything built behind us either, because there's a train track back there.

It's a landlocked obscure little street. We've got municipal water service, but all the houses are on septic systems.  (This is really why we ended up with the place; it was sold to someone else for a couple weeks, but after the septic inspection they decided against it.  So we were like, heck, septic system needs replacing in ten years?  Hell that's better than s***ting in a bucket!  Let's put in another offer!!!!)

I am obviously not going to be thrilled about leaving the farm.  I love the farm.  I love being in the country and I love this specific property.  But, it's still here.  The horses will stay here, and I am only a 7 minute drive away from them.  It's not ideal, but it's something I can do.  They won't suffer.  They might not even figure out that I don't live in the house across the lane from the barn anymore.  The farm is still going to be part of my life, just as it has been for my entire life.

Here's the thing… my husband, for over five years, has been working in Toronto.  That's almost two hours away from here.  And I can't be inconvenienced to do a 7 minute drive, there and back, twice a day?  I can do that for him.  It's worth it.  I actually do love my man more than my horses, believe it or not.

As for the work situation, it's looking like we can figure that out.  This has been terrifying.  Honestly.  Is there a thriving music industry in Smallburg Ontario?  Ha.  No.  Well, is there a thriving music industry in Toronto?  There is, but it's pretty hard to make a living. When you're paying Toronto prices for everything, it's just not worth it.  Not for us.

He'd be in the control room, looking out at his beautiful live room, with the three massive windows, and he'd be thinking about how much it costs to pay for it.  He's not tracking every day.  But he's got to pay for that big studio.

Very soon, we'll start building our new studio in our backyard.  We'll be going from 3500 square feet to 750 sq ft.  There will be absolutely no wasted space in our new studio.  Jethro will still have to drive to the city to record in big tracking rooms which are owned by other people.  It's okay.  If he has to stay overnight, getting a hotel room is way cheaper than the mortgage, condo fees, waste removal fees, commercial taxes and utilities that he's been paying.  He can record in the city and bring it home to mix it in his backyard.  I can sit beside him and write stories if he gets lonely.

Until our new studio is built, all of our gear will be set up in what would normally be the living room and dining room in our house.  We'll be hanging around upstairs, which is fine because that's been our arrangement in the farmhouse.  Our house has 4 bedrooms, so the biggest one will be our office/TV room.  Setting up the studio in our house isn't ideal either.  Well guess what?  Nothing is ever going to be perfect!  I'll take excellent over perfect any day.  We have had all the discussions about who will be the biggest problem -- him playing the same three words over and over for several hours, or me tiptoeing up the squeaky steps from the kitchen.  We'll be okay.  Gotta have some challenges in life, right?

Letting go of the studio has been difficult.  We love that place.  It's been good for his career, it's been a wonderful place to work, and it's been something we could be proud of.  But it's time.  Letting it go means getting our family back together.  Bucky heads off to college in September, but he has a home to come home to.  Selina can stay with us until she's ready to go out on her own.  I have thanked our magnificent studio and set it free.

It won't be a studio anymore.  A church has bought it.  We're okay with that.  I like to think that the drum booth, with soundproofing and three windows, will make an excellent room for parents to take their screaming infants during sermons!  We did have a hope that someone else would continue using it as a studio, because it's such a unique and beautiful and well functioning studio.  But in almost five years, this was the only offer we got.  Ever.  So it's time.

Our next home isn't what I had expected or planned.  I should just get used to that.  That is life.  This is not a farm.  A couple years ago we did some math and realized that we would not get a farm.  That was hard to accept.  I had imagined touring a small farm with my husband and kids, and what it would be like to picture our life in that house.  Instead, the two of us went looking at what we decided would not really be suitable for us, but by the end of the weekend couldn't stop thinking about it, and put in an offer with our guts in a knot.  And got overbid.  And then got a second chance at it.  It's in town, it's beautiful, and it's about to be ours.

I'll have to put up thick curtains to block out the street lamps, and the train whistle that we now hear as a mournful echo from the other side of the highway will be basically in my backyard… hey, it didn't hurt Jimi Hendrix to have a train practically on top of his studio… we'll be fine.  As fine as we are here, just different.

Seriously, it's beautiful.  Look at this.  Can you believe it?  The current occupants are friends of ours and they have taken loving care of it for the last two years.  They are happy for us.  The whole thing feels pretty good.

So you saw our front porch, and this is the back porch.  BACK PORCH.  TWO PORCHES.  I am going to consume so many cold beverages in the summers while sitting here.  Or there.  That will be my hardest decision - front porch or back porch?  Am I extroverted or introverted today?

And this is the patio Jethro will cross on his way to our future studio in the backyard.  Our backyard which is quite private and as you can see, doesn't have uncomfortably close neighbours.  It's about as country as you can get while still having good internet.

Know what else this house has?  Old woodwork, new wiring.  A shower.  Like an actual shower.  And a dishwasher.  For real.  A dishwasher.  Also a stone foundation cellar that a 6 ft tall person can stand up straight in.  And an unfinished attic.  Which our daughter thinks will be hers.  It also has room for a Digidesign console, a gear rack, a 7 ft grand piano, and old upright piano, three boxes worth of kitchen stuff I haven't seen in six years, three beds, some dressers, a few truckloads of books and records and CDs, and four people and a small dog.

Home, is really just inside a person and inside a group of people.  We've always had Home, and now we will have a House to put it in.

I need a break. (And a tractor to deal with all the problems…)

Hello.

I know at least four of you are waiting for me to tell you all about our trip to the Juno awards, which happened, like, three weeks ago.  And every day I think of more stuff I'd like to share with the world, or at least the seven of you who are still reading!

But it just ain't happening, folks.

This winter insists on dragging along… we had a few decent days of above-freezing weather, the snow banks were kind enough to melt slowly and not cause catastrophic floods, which was nice and I was very grateful.  The layer of scum hung on for a little longer until we got a decent rain.  More gratitude for a decent rain as opposed to a battering.  The place just stunk the high heaven though.  I need to seriously deal with some s**t.  For real, and metaphorically.  Well, anyways, now there's an inch of snow on the ground again.  And it's cold.  All weekend I mentally added up the list of outdoor work needing to be done, then having a lie-down to recover from the exhaustion of just thinking about gravel on the lawn, garbage that blew around all winter, dog poop, everything that didn't get done last fall before the winter hit.  Now I'm secretly relieved to have the snow cover it up for another few days.

It's not totally about the weather though.  I'm wrestling with depression again this year.  Last year I was feeling exceptionally well this time of year, but not now.

You know what the big difference is?  I KNOW THIS ISN'T PERMANENT.

So I'm feeling wretched.  It is what it is.  It's what's happening right now.  I'll deal with it and I'll get over it.

I can get cleaned up and leave the house and put on a smile, and it's a real smile.  I can laugh and enjoy people.  It's exhausting though, and afterwards I need recovery time.  The worst part is when people ask those innocent questions:  How's it going?  How are you?  What's up these days?

I don't lie.  I'll honestly say, the last few months have been a challenge.

I've figured something out though…

I need to be writing.

Not here.

Why wasn't I writing all winter, when I needed excuses to not be outside freezing my butt off?  My brain felt frozen.  I'd open this thing up and stare at it and feel kind of blank.  I've written something that's full of knots and I couldn't figure out how to untie them.  The harsh winter is over now, it's spring, the season most normal people associate with new life, and which I associate with scum and dirt and manure and unpredictable skies.  Difficulty.

You know what order I keep seeing? Things get worse before they get better.

I just need to take a few weeks off here… and untie some knots, rake up some dead grass, shuffle some words around, move some manure...

"But it FEELS LIKE -40 with the wind chill."

What, like -25 C wasn't cold enough????

The weather reporter is wearing a hat plus a fuzzy hood.

The son's school, which is in town and stays open when the rural buses are cancelled, is shut down.

My daughter isn't in school today because the entire college is shut down.

The highway is closed.

Our road is open but there's not much traffic - and it's slow.

The snow has drifted up to the barn windows.

Yesterday my ol man got the tractor and snowblower into the corral yesterday morning.  He cleared snow away from the manure pile.  By 5:00 the path was drifted over.

I'm not sure where I'm going to dump the manure.  For the last couple years I dug a path or get the snowblower in there.  It's too much this year.  IT HAS BROKEN MY SPIRIT WAHHHHHH.

The water tap in the barn is frozen.

So is my face.  After about five minutes outside my cheeks feel numb.  Or ten minutes.  Two minutes? I don't know.

But.

The electricity still works, so the trough heater is doing its thing, and thankfully the house has power.

I left the horses in the barn this morning, just picked the stalls a little and gave them hay.  The goats are unflustered and the chickens, well, they're chickens.

It's ridiculously beautiful out there.  The field is like a frozen ocean, and the sunlight shifts with every drift of snow.

And as much as I complain, I'm still so happy to not be working in an office right now.

2013 HICK CHIC GRAMMY REPORT!!! Shockingly unshocking fun!

I can promise you that after the Grammys, every year, all the critics, of both the perfeshnul and armchair variety, will be saying that the awards were all wrong, every performance was lip-synched, and the whole thing is out of touch with real music fans.  To which I say, blah blah blah.  We only get to watch; it's really about all those people you're looking at and listening to (and a few you're not even aware of) getting together and celebrating one more year of the bare existence of the music industry! So on that cheerful note, here's your REAL Grammy report, the only one that really matters, here on HICK CHIC!

So, I came in from the barn and we fired up the DVR (PVR? VCR killer??) and what's the first thing we see?   A tricycle with a flame thrower?  COOL!  Crazy circus Alice in Wonderland feathers and... Taylor Swift??!!????

Well, I wasn't expecting that.  I guess that's good? Should I be concerned about the symbolic guy strapped to the knife throwing target there?

We were watching with my mom.  Here's the thing about my mom: she's not a big country music fan and she is NOT a fan of Never Ever Ever No Seriously Like Ever Ever Never Like Ever Never Forever Never Getting Back Together Like Ever Never For Real Like Ever.  Actually her exact words were, "Oh GAWD!" and she hit the mute button so hard the remote skidded across the room while the rest of us laughed our heads off.

But then - the DVR quit!  WAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!  There's a big gap in my Grammy watching!!!!!

WHO DID I MISS?????

Okay, everybody STAY CALM!!!!!  We can handle this!  We have Etalk and the Googlenets!  Just reprogram it and keep watching!  Remain calm!  (Did I miss Johnny??????)

After that we were treated to a puzzling performance from Justin Timberlake.  I didn't get it.  I know, you're thinking, what's not to get.  I just didn't get it.  I didn't like the fake sepia that went to broadcast, and I didn't get the song, and I just didn't dig it.  Sorry, JT. You're great and all.

But I don't really understand the role of Jay Z in music, other than his wife being really awesome and he at least smiles when he's with her, which is nice.

I would like to say publicly that I love Dave Grohl.  DAAAAAAAAVE GRO-OHHHHHHHL!  He made a point of sending out some love to the engineers and producers in this business.  Thank you, Dave.  Thank you.  Then he handed a trophy to Dan Auerbach.

Happeeeee!

The Black Keys are awesome.  They wore their formal black leather jackets to the show.  Nice.

Then they got on stage and put on this crazeee performance with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (I'm not even going to pretend to be enough of a hipster to know anything about them) and it was loud and messy and fun!  Check out this feller's feather costume thing.  I don't know.  But I like it.

They're awesome.

Dave Grohl overhead- clapped for them.

Right about here I wondered if I missed the Johnny Depp appearance.

Now let's take a break to discuss The Dress Code.

Although phrases like "bare fleshy under curves" made me snicker, the part about covering the private parts had me rolling my eyes and saying DUH.  Should we even have to specify this? Things were getting a little out of control.  I figured just asking Gaga to stay home would solve the problem.

I was so excited about this.  Couldn't wait to see what showed up.  We're dealing with rock stars and general exhibitionists.  They are in general flaunting all of those written and unwritten rules of propriety.  For a living.

Anyways, the most shocking part was not the indecent outfits, or the brazen defiance of the rules, but rather how well everybody behaved.

Good ol Katy Perry wasn't about to let a dress code stop her from showing off what God gave her.

"What?  I bought this dress months ago.  Back when FLESHY UNDER CURVES were still okay."

I first wrote FLASHY under curves which is really more accurate.  Also Flashy side curves.

I'm just going to say it: she looks so good in that dress it's ridiculous.  You're looking too.  I know you are.  Everybody is.

Yeah that's right Ellen, we're all thinking it!

Alicia Keys inspired me to keep track of all the dress code infractions: technically not bare, but definitely fleshy.

Why do I have such mixed feelings about her?  She's gorgeous and talented.  She also sings flat all the time.  Well apparently her singing is the only thing about her that's flat.  Baboomchhhhhh.

Actually what bugged me the most was the way she got up to do her big drum thing, which may or may not have been real, and started off her performance with her same old, "Unh.... c'mon..." and I groaned.  Stop sounding like a thug!  Oh well.  I don't truthfully know if she's always flat.  She doesn't sound right to me, but my sense of pitch isn't great.  Jethro and the kids are always screaming about flat or sharp.  Maybe, maybe Alicia Keys is SO COOL that she just can't be bothered to bust a sweat getting up to the right note.  Maybe, she's too busy writing songs and having a great booty and raising a child, and being the Creative Inspiration Of Worldwide Imaginative Smartphone Creativity.  Maybe she doesn't have to sing in tune because she recently invented a way to hit two drums long enough to train them how to hit themselves.  Maybe she is MAGIC.

Aaaaand speaking of magical curves.  You are all dying to see what Rihanna dragged out.

WOW.  Gorgeous.  Surprisingly decent.  Beautiful.

Speaking of what she's dragging around with her?

I can't, I just can't,  because I will rant about this but they're not my friends and aren't asking for my advice, so all I want to say is, DUH. Let me repeat that: DUH.

Well, bad decision making aside, the girl is a brilliant performer.

I have completely forgotten who she performed with.  She was so intense.

The full-on Angelina treatment worked really well for her.

Such a simple, elegant dress.  Well done.

Aaaaaand speaking of the full-on Angelina...

Well now I think we can all agree that this look has become timeless, right?

But if it gets to the point that everybody's doing that look, and even some hick from Punkeydoodles is working the one leg out of the side slit thing, I can't help but wonder if it's totally jumped the shark and just isn't cool anymore, y'know?  Except what am I saying?  If it's good enough for Angelina and JLo it's good enough for anybody right?

So anyways.  There was a massive THING involving Bruno Mars, Sting, Rihanna, and Ziggy and Damian Marley.  First of all, Bruno Mars is awesome.  Sting?  Don't even.  This little Bob Marley tribute was pretty damn cool.

So one more word here - what's going on under that top?  Does she have underboob tattoos?  That's yucky. I wasn't sure if I should count this as a Fleshy Under Curve.  I am sure the phrase "underboob tattoo" should not exist and is way worse that "fleshy under curves."

But other than that, I thought this performance had great energy, and I really liked it.

HEY.  Jack White left his subterranean windowless recording studio long enough to make an appearance.

Did he ever!

I love this.  The girl-band thing has been his favourite gimmick with this record.  Ever notice Jack really likes female musicians?

After his edgy and moody number with the ladies, he walked across the stage and did THIS.

And I sat there with a rapturous grin on my face as Jack White tore up and blood and guts performance.

Plus, and call me shallow if you must, but you know I love clothes despite spending six months of every year wearing mostly coveralls, I adore what he's wearing -- are those eyes all over his jacket??? -- and also that he seems to have matched his Telecaster to his outfit, or vice versa, and dude, that is just plain classy.

Jack White is awesome, people.

Carrie Underwood wore a movie screen!!!!

Just when I was digging the song she was singing about how the wind in Oklahoma gets so strong it'll rip the nails right outta the planks and blow down your barn and your life and your marriage -- if I'm allowed to read into it metaphorically, that is -- her dress took on a life of its own.  It made her look like she had 8 foot long legs.  Gotta get me one of those.

Awww look at the cute British Hillbillies!!

Somebody asked Kelly Clarkson to show everybody else how to sing and she replied, "Sure, okay!" And did what she does.

Damn that cute white girl can sing.

Keep in mind, we have this little game where we guess who's singing live and who's taped.  Jethro always wins.  I assume he wins.  How would I know, though, really?  I'm not even sure anybody's in tune.

Prince showed up to present an award and basically taught a short concise course on how to be cool.  He just IS.  He isn't trying.  He doesn't have to anymore.  I don't know why he has a cane or wore shades indoors.  He's Prince; he can wear purple stiletto heeled boots and a jacket made of feathers and eyelashes and nobody bats an eye.

These two youngsters were like, "Yeah yeah Grammy whatevs nice WE GOT AN AWARD FROM PRINCE!!!!! DUDE THAT'S PRINCE!!!"

I found Gotye and Kimbra to be quite delightful.  They're enjoying this moment so much and rightfully so since that song was a monster hit.

Now I'm going to say it: I love this dress.  Don't start on me -- I know it's ridiculous.  But it's fun!  She is cute in it and clearly enjoying the heck out of wearing something silly and frivolous.  She picked the right place to wear it.  And she is wearing the heck out of it.

And as a bonus, no Fleshy Under Curves!  All things needing to be covered are covered!  The girl's a GENIUS.

I don't know what to say about this:

I change my mind constantly.  But Adele gets a free pass just on account of being awesome.  I think she looks prettier than last year, because I didn't like the blonde hair and harsh makeup on her.  She's gorgeous; no need to mess with what she's got.  Also- phenomenal singer.  End of story.

Hey, help me out here: DID ANYBODY UNDERSTAND THIS?  I did not understand this.

Am I not hip/ cool/ smart enough to get it?

Well, good thing I have Jack White.

Yet still no Johnny.

Then Tom Morello was on stage and I was happy despite not ever really understanding hip hop, other than "No Sleep Till Brooklyn."

Turns out we did miss a few things that I may or may not have cared about.  I care about this for one main reason:

I might take up a new career teaching people how to wear hats, because this girl is wearing her hat WRONG and it bugs me.  That is all.

Kelly Osbourne.

Just because.

ALRIGHT.  Yes I did miss Johnny.

I have a feeling I didn't actually miss much, judging by how the pix I found (and if anybody knows how to get them and give credit where it's due please tell me) he's standing in the same position except for his microphone arm.  It looks like he came out, one hand in his pocket, smirk firmly in place, a few extra scarves hanging off him in case he comes across a few cold people needing help, and said a few words and split.

The question would be, why Johnny, a movie star, would be at the Grammys.  The answer would be, BECAUSE HE ROCKS.

Maybe spending his breakup year sneaking onstage with all his musician friends had something to do with it.  Nah.  The place just needed desperately to be scuffed up a little.  Things were getting a bit to clean and respectable.  You show 'em, evil half twin!!!!

Besides, Johnny's been saying Screw It to dress code rules forever.

So here's the tally for Grammy 2013

Fleshy Under Curves - 4  (this phrase is now retired.  You're welcome.)

Fake Performances - either 3 or all of them depending on who you ask

Baffling Concept Performances - 2

Katy Perry - 2

Mention of Recording Engineers and Producers - 1.  WHOO HOO RECOGNITION!

DVR mishaps - 1.  I'll be okay.

Jack White and Johnny Depp in the same building - &%$$&*%%*%##^*(^&%$#

I've got just enough time to recover and go into training to prepare for the Oscars....!

Can't put 'em up on blocks for the winter...

Business has been slow.  Theoretically I am continuing riding lessons but in reality, winter makes it difficult.

The expenses don't stop though!  The horses still have to eat, even if nobody's paying me to sit on them. It's not like they can be packed away in a garage like a delicate antique car, waiting for spring.

Not that it matters.  For years I fed horses who didn't earn their keep.  They aren't here for the sole purpose of making a living, because I am not making a living with them! Not yet!  We have them because we love them, and they bring us happiness that we can't find in anything else.  Not TV and movies, or sports, or vacations.  Having these horses is a wonderful privilege, one that comes with a cost.

I didn't get into the riding lessons business thinking I'd get rich off it, and I knew winter would slow things down to a crawl.  So for now, the horses are just eating and pooping and existing.

And I still love them.  Even if I feel like all I ever do is clean up after them.  Even if I've only ridden a couple times since the new year.

They are so worth it!
