Yesterday my son Bucky built a treehouse in the gnarly Manitoba maple tree in the corner of the pasture. He did it by himself. He got some scrap wood from my Dad, borrowed my hammer and a handful of nails and got busy. We have a nice Maple tree in our own backyard but it isn't a good treehouse tree at all.
Today the Girl got involved. They now have a rope ladder and a bucket on a string to take things up. The horses have been over to check it out- they sniffed curiously then took off snorting.
For a few years now, my kids have spent much of their farm time in that tree, but now, with an actual platform, and handholds, I might never see them again. Well I know at least they'll come in for food and to watch The Simpsons.
I am so glad I marched into the living room and turned off the TV a couple of days ago. "Get out," I said. "We're at the farm. The weather's perfect. When we get home you'll be pissin and moanin that you're bored. Now get outside and find something to do!"
So they did.
This morning Dad took me into town to pick up a few things and when we got back, a little willowy elf of a girl jumped out of the tree grinning. Later on this afternoon, as I was fixing myself up with some highly effective Barn Sweeping Therapy, I heard them both singing in the tree. Can you imagine what a beautiful sound it was? First it was radio jingles, such as one for a national music store chain:
"Long & McQuade, where the music begins!"
Perfectly in tune, I would like to add...
Then, as I pulled a few cobwebs down with my broom:
"Shot through the heart, and you're to blame, darling you give loooooove a bad name"
Soon after that it turned into something like shot through the heart and you're SO LAME but the point is they were singing in the treehouse.
The Girl ran back into the barn to return my hammer. I wanted to tell her that I want to buy a farm NOW and I don't want to wait til next year but there was no point. They're having fun. Moving will be traumatic for them even if it's something they want too. It'll be hard to leave our home and our friends and yes even our schools. But I didn't say anything. They're having fun and why ruin it? They've had this place as a second home for their entire lives. It may not be the best situation but they are lucky to have this taste of country life. We appreciate it so much.
The Pug is tied in the yard sniffing country stinky air, the kids really earn their baths, and the horses are kept busy. Country life can get costly- I am reminded of this when I drive to town and see the massive tractors some of the neighbours have to use, and kids with dirt bikes and 4 wheelers to keep them busy, not to mention how many inflatable pools, playgrounds and swing sets. Nobody out here is driving into to town to take the kids to the park. I still don't get the whole "going to the park" thing! But here, really, all we need is a twisted tree with nice spreading branches and some scrap wood!
I love it. I love the treehouse and I love that they are 13 and 11 and they built it themselves.
(If I'm not reading or replying to your blogs it's because of nasty old dial up. I'm telling you, when we make the move and get our own farm, I will find a way to get hi-speed internet. I will dammit.)

I remember 5 years ago, and living in the country. Sending the kiddos out for hours of tree climbing/ creek wading/mudpie making fun.....
I miss it dreadfully.
i so wish i was in that tree house with them, mind you the singing would be off key if i was, it's great to see them having so much fun, too many kids these days just don't go out and play
When I lived in Smallburg, maaany years back, my aunt and uncle had some property that backed onto the river. There was an old tree house that over looked the river.
Lori, Jenny, and I claimed it as our own. (Mission Mary would NEVER allow me to build something like that in our yard!)
I am a complete and total city girl, you know that....But....I lovd that tree house. We cleaned it up and spent so much time there. It truly was magical.
I can't help but think that years from now, The Girl, and The Boy will cherish these memories.
P.S. Mine are camping out at Coreys. Can you believe it? An honest to goodness camp out? He moved in up the street..Remember our walk to Tim Hortons? He lives in the house RIGHT next to it...The back yard is very deep, and that's where they'll be...Imagine that. Camping out, then going next door for Timmies.
What a life.
I want one....a treehouse, that is...a real house up in the trees. There is one in my hometown, ya know? Like grown-up people live in it and it has power and water and you can't come in unless you know the secret password and stuff....
and I want you back in blogger-land with photos and comments and such. We miss you.
First of all, let me say how much I love that your son wants to be called "Bucky." It's just totally brilliant.
This story reminds me of my childhood in West Virginia. (Oh yes, I too am a hick, maybe even a hillbilly!) We decorated the walls of our treehouse with the lyrics of our "treehouse songs"--favorites that we sang at the top of our lungs when they played on the little transistor radio we had in there. I vividly remember, for example, writing "Give me the freedom to free my soul/ I want to get lost in your rock and roll" in purple magic marker. Such perfectly lovely memories.
This brings back a few memories. I built a tree house, too, but it wasn't on a farm. We had three big Oaks planted in a triangle in our backyard that served many purposes (swing, toy forts for my army men, brace for a wooden backdrop for when I needed to practice throwing baseballs, etc.) Two of the trees were the ends for the clothesline. Trees are wonderful for kids. Tree houses just add to the wonder growing up. Damn, I would like to go build one now. But I would probably fall out of the tree.
It's called satellite access... we use HughesNet and I LOVE them! Although, if you decide to go with a satellite connection, ask... I know the things that can trip you up! It's faster than dial-up, about equal to DSL, a little slower than cable {shrug}
Ahhh loved those country days in a treehouse which resembled more of a tree stand today for hunting deer but to kids, its their piece of heaven. My kids made a fortress in the woods and used small pieces of a tree trunk I had chain sawed as stools to sit on. It was their get-away but it build imagination and memories they still have today...a care-free and simple time. Something we all wish for and never seem to get enough of.
Hope you are able to get high speed internet in the country or at least DSL otherwise it may put a crimp on access the net. Its hard to go back to dialup!
Ummmm... a picture please? I would love to see it!
Time spent in a treehouse as a kid must truly be time well spent.
Chocolate- mudpies! Awesome! I can see why you'd miss those days.
Indoors- I guess I'll have to go climb the tree and sing off key for you!
Bid- I didn't know about that! Things I find out about you. I think by the way that the city campout is an excellent idea. Hell of a lot cheaper than actually going camping at a park. And then heading over to Timmy's for breakfast!!!
Dilling- My son wants to run power out to his tree house. I made the mistake of tellling him that one of my sunday school friends had three extension cords from the house to run the TV. Gah! Photos to come ok? Promise!!!! I miss my photos too- my blog just doesn't look the same!
Medusa- I'm just dying to tell Bucky that someone else thinks he's brilliant!!! West Virginia? Man...I bow to you. You're the real deal baby. Now I think I might have to take a marker up to the tree house when I venture up there.
Coffey- yeah, the falling out is the part I'm worried about. I really don't want to hit the dirt AGAIN this week. grrr.....!
Astaryth- I know a few people who have switched to Satellite. I think my folks could get it here but they don't really use it and it wouldn't be worth it for them. Plus I vowed that blogging wouldn't cost me any money so I ain't gonna pay for their hi-speed!
LeRoy- tree stumps stools!! We had those back in the bush. My grampa always left a few for us to find. Good times.
(dial up= crimp on access to net= crimp on my creativity!!!)
Marni-I'd love to put up pictures!! I can't really upload them when I'm here because it would take an hour and I don't want to tie up Mom's phone line. But there will be pictures! Soon!
Tod- well today they started fighting over the rope ladder but I'd still say it's time well spent. I mean, it's just the two of them on the property. It's not like they can stay mad at each other! mwahahaha!
Go go hick-chick-chickadees. How AWESOME is that.
My brother and I once built a fort out of mud and pine-needles. Lifetime bonding experience.
it's been a busy week and i haven't been here in a while. sounds like you're all having the time of your life out there!
yeharr
OVER HERE THERE ARE SO MANY TICKS THAT I`M SCARRED TO CLIMB OR LET THE LIL ONES CLIMB. I USED TO THOUGH AS A CHILD AND DO MISS IT, I GOT LOTS OF TICKS AND MOM JUST PULLED EM OUT BUT I`M TO SCARRED OF THE LIME DISEASE AND SHIT:(
DSL is truly the only good thing about living in the city!
I am turning 40 this year and it is my dream to build a tree house. My kids are too little to help right now, but soon....very soon, we're getting the hammer out.
Sorry about your dialup. I know the feeling. We're in Mexico for the summer and the Internet connection in this house could NOT be slower!!
Heidi...I think you should just go with a satellite internet connection rather than dialup. With your kind of creativity it would be a waste to do anything other!
To be young again. Lord, if I wasn't at the pool all day, we were building forts, walking in mud, starting fires with an eyeglass or getting into something. The only reason I was inside was if it was raining. My parents used to beg me to come back in. We'd stop for dinne but after dinner we'd try to get a spotlight game up or something. We had a sewer opening under a streetlight and we used to hang out there. Sometimes we would even get on both sides of the street and pretend that we had a rope or something that we were holding up when cars came by. They would slow down and then we would fall to the ground when they passed. We were weirdos...some things never change.
Xtin-mud and pine needles! THAT is awesome! And now I've got ideas...
Pirate- I figured you've been busy! We'll catch up don't worry.
Dinky- we don't have many ticks here but there is a lot of panic about mosquitoes and West Nile Disease. We don't have many mosquitoes at the farm luckily! I don't know which is worse- getting bitten and possibly getting a disease, or getting sprayed with toxic chemicals to keep the bugs away!
Hippy- you said it!!
Bitsy- make that dream come true! I'm sure your kids will appreciate it when they're older. And hey, thanks for taking the time on slo-mo to load up my blog and have a read! And to comment!
LeRoy I think I will have to do that. The internet will likely be a big part of my future whether I like it or not. I have no intention of quitting blog world any time soon!
DJ Andi- what a great little slice of youth you wrote there! I agree that kids should be outside in summer. Sometimes mine disagree but after I nag their butts out of the house...well you can guess. They don't really want to come back in again!
I miss climbing trees... I had one I spent hours in, my favorite place to read... I never had a treehouse, though. That is so cool...
Heidi...we all hope you NEVER quit the blog world! Our world would never be the same without YOU! :)
Heck, we all might kick in a few bucks to help pay for the satellite hookup!
Amethyst y'know it's not too late!
LeRoy...awwww! Let's hope that's not necessary though!
I'm back in hi speed internet land now this week and very soon there will be more pictures and more stories and, well, more of everything.
"I am so glad I marched into the living room and turned off the TV a couple of days ago"
That's tough love Heidi! I would love to spend some time on a farm. Does it have a pond with fish in it? And if it does can I come over Heidi?
Corky...we have no pond. It's really just 5 acres with a house, barn, and garage. A pasture field. No trails, except for the 4 wheeler track around the shop.
The funny thing is, out there, they get seven channels. We get one here, or maybe four if the weather's good and we fart around with the rabbit ears.
All that TV and I cut them off. yep, I'm tough all right. They didn't suffer. They watched more TV last week than they had all summer so far!
