...and then, after I struggled to shut my gaping jaw, I thought, I WISH I COULD DO THAT!!!!!
So here's the deal: I'm not good at organizing parties and after this one, she's on her own. If she ever gets married, she'll have to plan it herself. I can't believe that at the age of 19 I planned my own wedding. I mean, yeah, it was a bit of a 3 ring circus but we pulled it off. My Girl is okay with that though because this was the perfect 13th birthday party for her. She got to sit with her friends and watch Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
This is her photoshop masterpiece, entitled: "I LOVE YOU WILL TURNER!!!"
This is a flick that mommy and daughter can both agree on.
Was it a good movie? Don't ask. You know how shallow I am. Johnny Depp? He could read the phone book and I'd watch it. And then I'd tell you how sensitive a portrayal of the yellow pages it was- I laughed I cried I felt sullied and unusual etcetera etcetera you know. Orlando Bloom? Gawd. So handsome and now that he's hit the age of 30 I feel less dirty-old-woman about the whole thing. Geoffrey Rush? Go rent Shine. He's incredible. Bill Nighy? Man, just rent everything you can get your hands on with him in it. Jack Davenport- rent the British series Coupling which is way funnier than Friends could ever pretend to be. Heck, just close your eyes and listen to that man's voice. gahhhhhh!!! Keira Knightley? She has the best job in the world.
Everybody will get something different out of that movie. I found it very disturbing how the body count would rise and my precious children (and a few other's people's precious younguns) are watching. But I knew that my Boy would be just waiting for the action scenes. He loves that stuff. And the weirder the better- just a car chase is not enough for him but if there's a mutant octopus or a flaming skull he's all over it.
Check him out with his long hair and his skull & crossbones. What a guy. He wants to see more Jerry "Big Explosion" Bruckheimer productions but I'm kind of wary of that because I don't know how much this kid can watch before he explodes. He doesn't get nightmares...he just takes on bigger stunts on his bike...
My Girl on the other hand, has turned a corner in her life. She's still working her recent high pitched giggle, the one that comes out with any mention of Orlando Bloom/ Will Turner. There's something new though. In our usual "what was your favourite part" discussion we came up with the ending where Will's on the ship and he's got a bandanna tied around his forehead and the wind is blowing his hair back and I kinda melted and she looks at my sideways, that silly little-kid grin replaced by a knowing nod, and says, "I know. He was so beautiful."
It was my voice coming out of that kid's mouth.
Well...it had to happen sooner or later. At least she's got good taste.
We discussed this movie for its entire length afterwards. Pretty much the discussion consisted of what the heck happened???? We talked about how most basically decent people wanna be a little bit bad, and how going to see a pirate movie kind of fills that need for a few hours. It's called living vicariously, kids. We talked about that. Also how them pirates are just so cool lookin.
I myself make a fine lookin pirate. I was such a good Captain Jack a few years ago that I had to keep stopping in front of mirrors and reflective windows to admire myself. I was hot stuff. My husband was rather disturbed by the whole thing. I think he may have been a little worried about me.
I'm working up a new experiment now though. Not sure if I can make it fly but I know I've got a couple of great bandannas that'll work real good for holding down somebody's long dark hair. I'll need a big fan to use as a wind machine. I know where I can get a very thick old hemp rope, which will work well because I don't have accesss to a pirate ship but I do have a hay mow...
NOBODY MOVE! I've dropped m'brain...
You might drop your brain too from the pure awesomeness of this last photo...

LOL! He could read the phone book and I'd watch it.
Yup. I know you would. That was priceless.
We didn't get to see th emovie yet..poor KK...best not to mention it..so I'm glad that you didn't include any spoilers.
I don't quite recall your wedding as a 3 ring circus...There was rock sart, doing rock star things, but other than that,I don't recall any circus like behaviour at all. It was PERFECT. SO much fun. More fun than BOTH of weddings put togther.
Your boy and his bike. I'm thinking Jethro and 'The Corpse On The Couch.' I think that The Boy has more sense, actually. Thankfully.
Bill Nighy..LOVED him in Shaun Of The Dead.
I hope that The Girl had a WONDERFUL 13th Birthday. Still can't believe that she's a teenager.
SIGH.
Oops. rock STAR, not sart.
yeah it's ok, I speak Biddie. I'm fluent in Biddie!
sometimes I wonder if any of those recording studio bigshots thought our wedding was totally small town and hick, and then I realize that that's EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS and then I feel really happy inside.
I promise you, no spoilers. I am going to write up a review but I hate when surprises get ruined. So I won't do it to you!
Yeah. A teenager. Hard to believe.
oh, i wish i could bring myself to go into a theatre....i nearly always have to wait for dvd...unless i know the theatre will be nearly empty, i just can't do it...and what are the chances of an empty theatre with this one?
Believe it or not, it wasn't packed full. There were a few empty seats. Mind you this was at noon on a Sunday.
I don't like packed theatres either.
But I'll suffer for Johnny and Orlando. (and Geoffrey and Bill!)
yeharr
Hey it's my other favourite pirate!!!
i take it you enjoyed the film or was it that you just enjoyed the actor?! Happy 13th birthday to the Girl
I can't think of an instance where I haven't enjoyed the actor, but yes I did very much enjoy the film!
Who is this Johnny Depp, anyway? Didn't he do gay porn movies for a while? Not that I watch them, by the way. My gay sister, Stephen, told me - I think.
no no, that guy's last name is Deep. Not that I would know.
haha. Seriously I just made that up.
Am I the only one who thinks it would be great to be able to lick your own brain? Jethro thinks I'm weird.
Oh oh oh I'm going on Thursday! Can't wait. Yo ho ho and a bouteille of rum, as my father used to say!
Also, and this may make me a dirty old woman, but ...
... if there's a mutant octopus or a flaming skull he's all over it
makes me want to marry The Boy.
Oh Xtin, if only he was 20 years older eh? I think you'd be a lovely daughter in law! hee hee!
Do go see it and just park your brain and be amazed. Don't try to follow the plot. Just soak up the visuals!
Heidi,
I can agree with both you and your daughter. I have loved Johnny Depp since he was on 21 Jumpstreet, and Orlando is new but I love him too! ;*)
sounds like a smashing good time!
Just put the brain in nuetral and watch, eh Heidi? I will see it someday but I'm not sure I will have the same reaction as you...we shall see.
The closest I can come to a pirate ship is my canoe...and I don't think that will do! Might be better than a hay mower. At least a canoe floats :)
Hunter, you got me beat- I missed out on the whole 21 jump street thing. It was Edward that stole my heart! I do think my kid has good taste! Orlando is very handsome.
Tim- a smashing good and swashbuckling good time!!
LeRoy-I'm sure not everybody will like it. Critics sure aren't crazy about it.
yeah the hay mow thing...biggest problem there is lack of sky. I think to be a pirate you really need a big empty sky above. I might have to hang the hemp rope off a neighbour's combine. Some of my dad's neighbours have got massive machinery...but I also think if you want to be the captain of your own canoe then by all means you should!!
Ok, I saw it tonight. I did NOT like the ending. I do get the brain lcking reference, now. It was a good movie, over all. I wish you could have seen Kayla's face in the first Captain Jack scenes..priceless.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm planning to take my boys this weekend. Thanks for the photos, Heidi, and the enthusiasm - it's totally contagious! :)
Biddie- I KNOW! Like, once every ten years? What is that? However, the whole lotta capt Jack scene was AMAZING.
Holly, that's what I'm here for, hee hee!
You 'n me, we have the identical taste in actor men. I was just saying to another blog pal how I'd pay double (or more!) for three hours in low light with this cast. :)
Well said!!!!
i love that your daughter's photoshop ode includes covering up keira knightley's face.
hilaaaaaaaarious!
isn't that funny??? It's such a teenage girl thing to do!
I am so hoping I get to see it this weekend......(Fingers crossed)
Yes, go see it, and take your husband!!!
