What a mess. People have been fighting about it, getting married about it, writing about it, singing about it, dancing about it, giving birth about it, crying about it, and starving for it for thousands of years.
Love is difficult. Despite being a total sap, a hopeless romantic, my evil little cynical streak keeps getting in the way. I scoff at Valentine's day and refuse to buy my husband a gift. He doesn't care. He wants the same thing for Valentine's every year. It's the same thing he wants for his birthday too, and for our anniversary. Being a practical kind of girl, and hating to spend money, I of course keep on giving him the same thing. You'd think he'd get sick of it but he never does.
I picture Cupid as some punkass kid with white wings and horns poking out of his forehead. Oh no wait, that's me. (Cupid has the bow and poisonous arrows. I have a pitchfork. I'm the farmer angel devil. )
I've been in love with the same guy for twenty years.
Understand the jolt I got when I pieced this realization together. We met each other in February of 1987. Yes, I'll tell you all about it. Later. Right now I'm still processing the time. Twenty years.
It wasn't love at first sight, even though I liked the look of him. I can't say that the sparks flew. I just really liked him. I remember in great detail everything that I was wearing that day, what he was wearing, how he was standing, and what my friend was wearing when she introduced us. And I'll tell you all about that too. Later.
This whole Love Month thing isn't just about my big man though. Love has many shapes and forms.

I thought that you said that you had a bad memory? You can remember what we all were wearing? That is amazing. You must have known, even then, that he was someone special. You must have tucked it away in the memory banks for a reason.
Love does take many forms, and I love your interpretation of it....
I do have a bad memory! It's all blurry and muddy except for those flashes of vivid focus. There's much more blur than focus!
Yeah, I must have known he was someone special.
Loves it.
you mean he gets the 'same' thing for valentines, anniversarys, birthdays etc? mmmmm what about the rest of the year lol
yeah, only special occasions, hahahaha!
Aaahhh shucks...
Aahh tell you wuuuuhhht. That hick chick o' mine is somethin special.
Hard to belive that was 20 years ago, and even when time is marked by the growth of chilluns, it still just seems like a little while back...
Don't worry baby, we'll git yer pickup truck all fixed up!
xoxo
jethro sounds sweet!
he is sweet!
I can't show you a picture of his eyes open because it will slay you.
Hey heidi, saw ya at Jo(e)’s and hopped to your profile:
I’m *so* with ya on Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, The Princess Bride (“Hello, lady!”), playing guitar badly and questioning my own (in)sanity..
love the love post..
but seriously, can't agree with the Legolas pix: LOTR is all about Aragorn dahling... oh, that long hair makes me swoon lol
and i do believe in valentine's day: any excuse for a celebration, i say.
looks like you have a bee-autiful life...
Kate, I know. I just found a good picture of Aragorn and it's going up before the end of the day! Viggo is Heavy. I mean, he's the king, right? I do love Orlando though. I'm waiting for him to turn thirty so I don't feel like such a dirty ol lady.
Thanks for comin by!
20 years is something truly unique and special!
Here's to Love Month!
Great post Heidi! I had a Barry White tune playing in my head while I read it. Was that intentional? :)
Blink a couple of times Heidi and it will be 25 years....hmmmm the silver anniversary for those who are not color enhanced already.
nice one, heidi...
um, i can't think of a question for you...i always like what you come up with to talk about so...thanks.
Heidi,
I just finished reading this and your previous post...
Listen, girlfriend, you are a writer for sure--your man is right when he says keep at it!
I have been in your shoes: no money, high stress, feeling overwhelmed and worth much less than I know I'm worth, questioning my writing aspirations, wanting a REAL job.
But it's clear from these tales you tell that IT is in you.
Keep that space on the shelf.
Cindy, lots more where that came from!
Tod! I apparently am more powerful than I thought!
Leroy, it's going fast. I don't know where it's all gone...his hair will be silver too in five more years!
Dilling, you are so welcome, any time.
Therese, thank you so much. I really appreciate that. and I'm so pleased that you know what my shelf space is for!
SO sweet....!
you made me smile with this one.
yeah Heidi, but love is ageless, color blind and sometimes hard of hearing...all good things for two people who instinctively know each other so well for so long.
I partly agree with you about Valentine's Day. It's gotten way out of control and shouldn't require spending lots of money. Several years back Cranky boycotted it. (Please realize I never wanted or asked for a gift, just a card or something, along with a smile and a kiss.) While I don't like the commercial nature of it, I couldn't help but be hurt by this. Pretty silly, huh?
LOVE all the pictures, but there are two that truly make me happy... can you guess which? (wink)
Yankee, it just confirms that we are WOMEN and we get silly and hurt about things! I don't think wishing for a card and a kiss and a smile is out of line!
marni, yeah I can guess (wink)
Legolas?
No...you can't love Legoas.
He must live wild and unfettered by the chains of love.
(Okay...that was creepy) ;)
Steve~
mmmmmm..... orlangolas....
i'm gonna send you a picture... check yer mail.
Has Orlando Bloom turned 30 yet?
Cuz then I won't feel like such a dirty ol lady.
