Has the man gone nuts?

One of my absolute Favourite Literary Agents To Reject My Work is having a Largely Indispensible First Paragraph Challenge over at HIS BLOG and he wants everybody to know about it! How many entries will he get? He's at 261 as I write this (although some contestants, like me, took up their full three-entry allowance). He's extended it until Thursday. I think he's insane, personally. He'll be reading entries and agonizing over this all weekend. I am agonizing over it and I'm not deciding on the winner! I'm getting a pain just thinking about it. I felt bad for taking up space. But I'm a writer and that's what writers do- increase the word pollution in this world!!! I'm only sending you over there to check it out because he's my Favourite Agent To Reject Me and he asked for it. I'd do almost anything for that guy, including not email any more queries to him! Go have a look- some entries will make your eyes cross, or even itch, possibly bleed if you're not careful, and some are incredibly good. They're so good they make mine look mediocre. Go on, git! Git on over there!

Hmmm, think, think, think...bleeding eyes, or doing the laundry????
I think that I'll take laundry for now. I'll check it out later :)

Ok, I checked some out..not bad, but not like yours. None of the ones that I read, anyway.
Seriously. Yours is better.

YOU are awesome.

I'll slip ya your twenty bux later, hehehe

By the way, did you find any of mine in there?

I entered the first paragraph of TROUBLE which has been modified since the version you got. I also stuck in the beginnings for the two new ones that I'm working on.

They look pretty long and rambling compared to some. A few of the others just BANG right into the action. I dunno. I think a bush party scene hints at some action, not?

Makes me kind of nervous to enter something I've just started to write and am still formulating in my mind...but it's kind of fun to put it out there.

No, I didn't see any of yours, but I just read a few. I'll go back later, right now I am supposed to be doing something else...
(btw..20 bucks? i thought that we had agreed on 40?)

I have read quite a few of them... Some of them don't suck, some of them made me cringe, but none of them make me want to read more... Unlike what little of your work I have read....
It will be interesting to see which he picks...
I'm good with ideas, and great with outlines, it's filling up the in-between that I'm not good at... Writing for a newspaper sort of screwed with my creative writing... Although I did get the Poet of the Year Award at the local junior college a few years ago.... HAha... What a joke...

I liked your entries too. I thought they stood out. :)

How about, "Damn!" Anything can come after that; humor, death, sex, apology for sex, mystery or religion.

Biddie, laundry eh? me too... (How about 30 plus a free book???)

Anita, newspaper writing is a very precise skill! I hope you'll do more of it. For real. Although your blog's been quite the news machine lately.

Wow, Tod, you actually got through until you found mine? Brave guy. Slow day at work?

Heidi the Hick said...

Well Coffeypot, I think I've got five out of six of those. Maybe not in the first paragraph though.

Hey everybody.

I'm going serious on this project.

I've entered three paragraphs, and while there are a few that I think knock mine out, I think mine are pretty okay. If I may think such a thing.

There's going to be ACTUAL VOTING on this contest, and I'm going for it. I'm going to be asking you to vote for me. I want the big prize.

"The winner will receive a partial mansucript critique from yours truly and a copy of one of my client's books (your choice!). Runners-up will win, as always, my everlasting admiration and the satisfaction of a job well done. Oh, and a query critique as well."

I want that critique, from that agent. I need all the help I can get!

So, this is what a competative freak I am..there's a contest and now I spend the whole evening coming up with a paragraph - for the book I don't have! But seeing as how the openings to the stuff I know how to write is aimed at the average six year old with a 40 word vocabulary, I gave up. I wasn't sure that - "pumpkins, pumpkins, nice and round, green and growing, on the ground" (I know, still about the pumpkins), would win me anything. But I will go and vote for you, several times over if it will let me!

Heidi, I went over there are read your stuff and of course I loved it. I also posted one of mine, just to be silly though. ;)

Heidi the Hick said...

Corky, that's not silly! That's fun!

Rain, you too! Heck why not post a rhyming verse?

Hey, after all, he wants to go huge with this thing. He said so!

Heidi the Hick said...

Wow- Captain Corky and Balloon Pirate!

You guys ROCK!!!

Because I know your style from reading your blogs, I could really get your "voice" but most of all it's cool to see your entries!

I'd read more from both of you. Just want you to know that.

Balloon Pirate said...

I just sent mine. I could only find two of yours.

I love the 'girls running wild' one.

yeharr

Heidi the Hick said...

Yeah Pirate, I think most guys would like the girls running wild. That's actually shaping up to be a rather nasty story. And it's not like I have a choice about writing it- it chose me!!!

Dude, if I lose this thing, I hope it's to you.

Heidi the Hick said...

Oh- as for my entries-

I put the last two together. The first one is way closer to the top of the page. And that's the one from the novel which is now at this moment out wandering around in agent world looking for a home.
