...and still does to this day.
Despite not following the news very carefully- actually most of my info comes from other people’s blogs- I’ve become aware of what many are saying is The Most Important Discovery Ever Ever Ever.
Without going into details: a tomb has been found containing what are believed to be the bones of the Jesus, and others who are suspected to be his wife and children.
Some Christians are very upset about this. I’m a Christian. I am not upset. I don’t think this discovery has to have a big impact on my faith.
I run the risk of making enemies by saying this, but I feel like I have to say it. I think everybody should just calm the heck down. As far as I know, it hasn’t been proven. There have been famous hoaxes already. And in case you didn’t know, the Da Vinci Code is fiction. The names Jesus, Joseph, Mary, Judas, were all very common names for that time and location. Much like in 1970 in Ontario the common names were Jennifer, Lisa, Jeff, and Mike.
If it is real, I still don’t see why it changes everything.
Christianity is built on a few landmark events: the birth of Christ, his teachings, his death, his resurrection and his ascension to heaven.
People are saying that it negates the concept of the ascension of Jesus into heaven. Must we take it so literally? We really do have to keep in mind that most of this stuff was written down years after the actual events. This was not a culture that was heavily into record keeping.
I myself hope to ascend to heaven someday, although I have no idea what “Heaven” will be and also I hope to find out a good long damn time from now, since I plan to be dead when I do this ascension thing. My kids and I were talking about this on the weekend. My son figures it’s not a big deal because why would God want Jesus’s body in heaven? It’s not what matters anymore after we’re dead. (But my Boy also thinks that Criss Angel went back in time and made Jesus disappear so that he could make them think he went up to heaven. Maybe Jesus was a very slick illusionist.)
Oftentimes science and faith try to collide. Being a Christian can really mess with your head. How can an entire physical body get sucked up into the sky? How can a guy come back to life after three days? This is why it’s called FAITH. Faith requires a huge suspension of disbelief. Some people would say it takes a good amount of stupidity too.
I think true faith takes a lot of thinking and questioning. To believe blindly is easy.
Here’s the thing for me though, the reason why this changes nothing:
I DON’T CARE.
I don’t care if Jesus really was only purely human, like you and me.
I don’t care if he was only dead for like, 20 minutes. That’s not so hard to believe. I don’t care if, after his resuscitation, he gathered up all his friends, gave them instructions on spreading the word of his ministry, and then promptly split while they weren’t looking...then met up with his wife further down the road where they took off and had a nice little retirement somewhere out of the public eye.
I don’t care if he was just a guy. He was a guy who asked the hard questions and challenged the popular thinking of the day. He was a revolutionary. My dad the preacher’s son has referred to him as a S**t Disturber.
What I do care about is that approximately 2000 years ago a guy was born who would change the way the modern world dates our existence. He had that big an impact on the world. He was a teacher. He was a healer. He didn’t change the world by killing anybody, or by being stronger and more cruel. He changed the world by showing us that we can be stronger in silence and kindness. We don’t win by having more than our peers; we can measure our success in our hearts instead of our wallets. We have responsibilities to our god, our earth. We’re supposed to live a meaningful life and be good to each other. We’re here to make the best of it. If we’re given a coin, don’t bury it; use it to build more. If we’re bullied, don’t perpetuate the cycle of violence. If we see someone in need, help him.
I have just said that what we read in the Bible may not be the most accurate historical record. I haven’t even read the entire Bible. Honestly, a few years ago I read something so disturbing in the Old Testament that I haven’t been able to go back and finish it. But I’ve read the four Gospels many times. They are reasonably consistent in what they tell about the man himself.
I don’t care if Jesus was black, white, Hebrew, Asian. I don’t care if he was divine or human. I don’t care if, at the end of his life, he ended up in a tomb with the remains of his loved ones.
What I care about is how Jesus changed me.

Well said.
All the *good* done, in the name of whatever prophet or hero or king or queen or government or organization is what I care about. Not the veracity of stories written by peoples with agendas.
Brava for speaking your mind!
I totally agree. What matters, is that there was something special enough about his behavior, and his teachings, to STILL be talking about him this many years later. That's some SERIOUS PR.
I also never believe anything scientists say, because they ALWAYS come back decades later, and say "Oh whoops, we've discovered something new to disprove that theory"
amen
wow.
they dug up jesus?
got to get some serious bad karma for that.
Therese, thank you, agreed totally, and thank you again!
Jackie, you got it: some serious PR!
I'm no scientist (but my 10 year old son is) but it looks to me like science is an ever- evolving piece of work. You know, like the more we learn, the more we find out we don't know?
Dilling, aaaaamen.
Cara!!!
"they dug up jesus?
got to get some serious bad karma for that."
hee hee hee!
Okay kids, now I'm going to fess up.
Before anybody read this, I took out the line about dying and coming back to life.
I said that Nikki Sixx was dead for like, 20 minutes, and look at him now. He's no Jesus, sure, and not even the best bass player in the world, but that Crue show last year was otheworldly!
Then I chickened out. It just seemed way too cheeky to put in the post. I still think it's kinda funny though. My evil streak thinks it's kinda funny.
I wish more people looked at religion like you do.. we would have a few less 'religious' wars! Most religions are the same at their very base. Don't kill each other, try to help each other out, basically do the right thing.....
They should all quit sweating the small stuff and look at the bigger picture ;p
How refreshing.
You are the real deal Hick!
Besides there are a few problems with a multicellular bipedal hominid physically ascending into the upper atomosphere and beyond..there is that whole lack of heat, oxygen and gravity thing goin' on... so a literal ascension wouldn't necessarily be that practical..course there is that G factor that I suppose supercedes all those rules...
Anyway I am humbled by your complete 'whatever' for dogmatic certitude.
Bravo.
Keep the faith Heidi :)
here here! an just how would they prove it is Jesus, DNA i dont think so!
Nice Post Heidi. I get most of my news from blogs too. I haven't heard about Jesus in a while... Looks like the Britney thing is finally dying down. Thank God.
Here Here....Very well put. You captured what 'christianity' means to me...unfortunately we all see the world in different ways ans some would say taht because I can see how science and religion can combine in the middle, if we just don't read every word of the bible and think it is literal...My aproach to religion is very read between the lines get the deeper meaning etc... if everyone looked at religion like we do the world would be a much nicer place to live.
Well said. I don't like organized religion as a whole. Jesus taught good-will to others and many religious groups seem to have mistaken this for "good-will to others who believe the same thing/have the same opinions as you".
I would prefer it if Jesus had been married with kids -- then he would have been in a good state of mind and could raise some nice kids. Why is abstinence necessarily good?
Amen Sista!
Well said, Heidi. Son-of-God or Son-of-a-Bitch, he still changed his world and subsequently, ours.
Did you hear that they also found the bodies of Adam and Eve? Do you know how they know it was the firstly duo? They didn’t have navels.
Who are "they" and why do "they" continue to feel like a discovery like this is going to totally change the Christian religion?
I tire of it.
Or maybe I am tired of most things right now...
Very well put. Can't say anything else. Amen.
Well this is a relief. I figured I'd get a few strong disagreements, which I can handle, but it is a good feeling that I'm not the only one with this opinion.
Despite being a baptized member of a Mennonite church, which I love, I'm still leery of the whole Organized Religion thing. I feel like humans are so capable of taking a perfectly good thing and ruining it with rules and punishments and all that.
Let's keep discussing things like this. There's room in my world for opinions...even if they don't perfectly match mine!
i think that the focus on the "mysteries" of the church detracts from the core message preached by jesus
i think that ridiculous literal interpretations of the bible do no-one any good
does it really damage anyone's faith if jesus wasn't the "magic" guy? do we need magic to believe in the teachings?
Well you know, I kind of like magic. I read lots of novels involving magic. There is something...fun? special? about the magic of a literal interpretation.
But I don't NEED magic to believe what Jesus taught.
That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
Thanks Cadbury for your 5 cents worth!
i'm not knocking the miracles, or the magic
i'm suggesting that the church gets a little weird in its devotion to the mysteries
does anyone really give a shit whether Mary was "ever-virgin/eternally-virgin" or if she had sex with Joseph after Jesus was born? or if she wasn't a virgin but Jesus was still divinely conceived?
that's the kind of stuff i'm really getting at in my previous comment.
there's a larger commentary about whther we need the miracles to support the belief in the teachings, but that is less an issue for me than the weird stuff that is based is some cockamamy misogynist ideas that came out of 1st century Greece... (Paul)
Yeah Cadbury, I admit, I feel that way too.
And may I say (although slightly off topic) congrats for having the guts to bring up the apostle Paul.
Obviously a wise man and a man of peace, but sometimes I think the modern church has put too much emphasis on his teachings. He had good stuff to say but ...he sure did get to say a lot. Like, a lot.
I HAVE TO SAY THAT I AGREE WITH dysd.housewife ON THIS ONE...ALL THE WAY! AMEN LOVE TO YOU AND YOURS <3
very nicely done. perhaps the world is finally noticing the difference between Christians and Christianists.
hopefully the latter group will fade back into the murk when they discover that the only time people notice them is when they're being laughed at.
yeharr
I was raised by some honest Christians and as mentioned before, one of my Grandpas was a pastor. I'm sure they took the Bible very literally. They were anything but stupid...it's just that I think that's how and what they were taught, and to deviate from those beliefs at that time was considered very very bad!
I have known some wonderful good people who are Christians. Still do. All kinds of Christians: honest ones, thinkers, rebels, followers.
I've also known some who are totally two faced.
Takes all kinds, I guess.
Alls I'm sayin, folks, is that this Jesus guy makes me think and challenges me and gives my life some meaning.
