Does every little girl love ponies?

It's Love Month around here, remember?

Beauty. I was 5, she was 15. We got ten years together.

She was the perfect bitchy cranky stubborn ol mare. She dumped me off her back more times than I care to recall. She taught me so much. I loved her just because she existed.

Chocolate. The first love of my life. I was 7, she was barely a year old.

She was a surprise birthday present. That's right, I got a pony for my birthday. ( I think she was free or next to nothing, or else I wouldn't have gotten her at all!) I loved this pony with a blazing intensity that only a little girl can have. I drew pictures of her, I wrote stories about her, and I spent long hours with her. Sometimes I'd just lean on the railing of her pen in the barn and let her lick my hand. She was perfect to me.

I got ten wonderful years with her. It just broke my heart that she died so young. I had visions of keeping her around until I had kids of my own.

But then this guy came into my life. There were other horses that came and went too, but he was special. With him, I got seventeen years of frustration and glory! My kids loved him too.

And the cycle continues. Because you know, once you've loved, you want to love again!

Notice how in that last picture, Chocolate has her back to him, like, "Get behind me, unworthy nag!" She'd always been #2 to Beauty and damn if she was gonna be #2 to this young whippersnapper.

Honestly she was the sweetest little thing. Loved her dearly!

I always wanted a horse, but we lived in "town." Which meant we were about 8 blocks from the city limit. I think my parents just didn't want to deal with the hassle!

I did get to go out to ranches for "summer camp" in the summers to ride, though!

Yes. Every girl loves ponies. Then girls grow up and find that they feel differently about the boys they hated so much growing up... then we all know what happens after that.

Awwwwuh! That 2nd pic is so beyond adorable. (The 1st one didn't load for me...how rude!)

When I was a kid, I knew there was no way my folks would get me a horse. (They had em in IL but when we moved, they were sold.) I begged and pleaded for a fake fiberglass one like they have all dressed at the western stores.

That didn't happen either. :( Might explain why I am the way I am today...? The world may never know....LOL.

Very sweet post tho, H.

ldbug- a lot of parents don't want to deal with the hassle! Or the expense! I was well aware as a kid that I was lucky to be living on a farm where the ponies could eat cheaply!

Red- Once again you nailed it!

JJ- I think you should get some riding lessons. That way you can get your horse fix without the expense of purchasing and feeding and boarding and medicating and shoeing and all that stuff that I've generally gotten away with not doing!

Beautiful Pics of you and your pony as a girl. Those are the kind of memories that are just priceless. The ones that shape you as an adult. So glad your parents gave you that :)

I love the photo of you and Chocolate. So incredibly cute.
It's funny the way that animals can touch our lives. I still miss Poodle, and Ruby Tuesday is the light of my life. Well, yeah, I love the kids but.....There's something about puppy/horse/cat/bunny love. Nothing better.

Oh my gosh, I just looked at that pic of me with Chocolate again and I was so tiny! So tiny! Look at that toothpicky arm! And the mosquito bite scab. That was the real me!

That photo reminds of something that TMOC said. Oh, Heidi, you were so spoiled! You got a pony for her birthday! Of course, what I do I know? I go into debt every year at Christmas.....Words of wisdom.......

I never really wanted a horse. I think my mother must have said something about the really big poops they put out! I wanted anything with a motor.

I love your pictures and your terrific horses. No wonder it's so difficult to find the right horse for you now!
