The job lasted a couple of weeks and we were so far out in the boonies we had to camp out. No motels. A local rancher leased part of the project area from our client, and he had a herd of 10 Belgians out there. Beautiful horses.

One day we were out working and one of my guys said, "Hey look!" and pointed back toward camp. It was about 2 miles away (you can see for a looong way out there)and we could see the Belgians stampeding through camp. We were too far away to do anything about it. All the short tents got trampled or yanked out of the ground. I had a bigger tent, and one put his head through the top of it ripping a big hole.

Always prejudiced me against Belgians.

Our neighbor in Tehachapi had a very sweet Percheron, however. By the time I came along the work horses had been gone for 20 years. Both my grandpa's had to be practical and not keep an animal that wasn't earning his keep...although my mom's dad liked them a lot.
